Two Armenian Citizens Involved in 2020 Protests Arrested
On January 18, authorities in Yerevan were permitted by a court to detain two persons suspected of assaulting former Armenian National Assembly Speaker Ararat Mirzoyan and burglarizing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's home.
According to the Armenian National Security Service (NSS), the arrests are a part of a criminal case brought against hundreds of persons who, early on November 10, 2020, in Yerevan, stormed and looted multiple buildings in response to the declaration of a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh mediated by Russia.
Ararat Mirzoyan, the then-speaker of the Armenian Parliament, reportedly suffered severe injuries when the enraged mobs allegedly broke into Nikol Pashinyan's office, apartment, and the Armenian Parliament. After hearing of widespread demonstrations after the declaration of the ceasefire, one of the individuals who was later detained, named by the NSS as A.B., hurried to the government building and entered the home despite being ordered not to do so by the State Security Service. After leaving the house, he walked to Demirchyan Street and joined the mass disorder participants who had attacked Ararat Mirzoyan. He broke through their lines, went up to Mirzoyan, who was already on the ground and struck him with his foot. A.B. severely hurt Mirzoyan, and other rioters lost consciousness and were transferred to the Erebuni Medical Center as a result.
The other detained person, T.P., took Pashinyan's wife's gold jewelry valued at roughly EUR 9,000, including a gold watch, necklaces, pendant, and bracelet. He then handed the items to a friend, who, on November 16, 2020, pawned them to a credit institution.
