Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and Ombudsman Issue Statement Regarding Mikheil Saakashvili

| News, Politics, Georgia

In a statement issued on December 15, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that it is seriously worried by the substantial deterioration of Mikheil Saakashvili, a citizen of Ukraine.

The Ministry urged Georgia to give Mikheil Saakashvili appropriate medical care and to satisfy the request for the postponement of Mikheil Saakashvili's sentence to transfer him to one of the European or American clinics for further treatment in light of his current state of health.

Moreover, on December 16, Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada's Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Telegram that Mikheil Saakashvili's health has seriously declined. He added: "I believe it is vital to ensure that his life is not in danger."

"I appeal to the Georgian authorities to let me meet with the Ukrainian national who is presently receiving treatment at the Vivamedi medical facility in Tbilisi," the official stated.

"The critical situation in which Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili now finds himself causes alarm and concern. Therefore, the Georgian side should either provide him with appropriate medical assistance and appropriate conditions for placement in a medical institution or facilitate his transfer to European or American medical institutions. Ukraine, as a democratic and modern European state, will pay maximum attention to protecting the rights and interests of its citizens living abroad," the Ombudsman emphasized.
