
US Embassy Responds to Azerbaijan's Statement on USAID Operations

On January 18, Erin Robertson, the US Embassy Spokesperson, addressed a query regarding Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov's announcement that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) would cease operations in Azerbaijan after June 1, 2024.
Robertson reaffirmed the United States' commitment to maintaining dialogue with the Azerbaijani government, emphasizing the strong partnership between the two nations. She noted that since 1991, USAID has provided over $450 million in assistance to Azerbaijan, working collaboratively to address the evolving needs of its population.
Robertson detailed USAID’s key initiatives, which have included:
- Combating COVID-19;
- Modernizing critical sectors such as agriculture and health;
- Supporting rural livelihoods;
- Fighting human trafficking;
- Expanding opportunities for women and girls; and
- Promoting regional economic integration.
She also stated that discussions are ongoing with the Azerbaijani government to identify new areas of collaboration and reaffirm the enduring partnership between the two countries. The United States remains committed to exploring ways to continue supporting Azerbaijan’s development and shared goals.
