US Official: "We Made Proposals to Azerbaijan and Armenia That Could Resolve Their Differences"

In response to the question of Congresswoman Madeleine Dean in the Foreign Relations Committee of the Congress on May 23, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Dereck J. Hogan said that at the meeting of State Secretary Antony Blinken with the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia held in Washington in early May, some proposals were put forward to the parties to resolve the most controversial issues, such as the mutual withdrawal of forces on the border, the mechanism for resolving disputes in the future peace agreement, and the rights and security of ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The congressman said that on May 22, he met with Elnur Mammadov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, and discussed the situation in the conflict region with him. He also asked about measures to lift the blockade of the Lachin corridor. In response, Hogan said that Secretary of State Blinken, in a meeting with foreign ministers, insisted on opening the Lachin Corridor to commercial and private traffic.

"We have presented several proposals that would allow the parties to resolve their differences. They will continue discussions in Chisinau on June 1 with the participation of the French president, the German chancellor, and the president of the European Union Council. will focus on finishing, but it's a long way," Hogan noted.
