US Warns Azerbaijan Against Violating Armenia's Territorial Integrity; Azerbaijan Responds

On November 2, the US State Department reiterated its strong support for Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This followed earlier concerns expressed by the Lemkin Institute for the Prevention of Genocide about the situation on Armenia's border with Azerbaijan and the high probability of a new war in the region. On October 31, the Institute issued a "Red Flag Alert", expressing deep concern about the possibility of an Azerbaijani invasion of Armenia in the coming days and weeks.

In response to a question, the State Department stressed that any violation of Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity would have serious consequences. "We have emphasised that any violation of that sovereignty and territorial integrity will have serious consequences. We regularly reiterate our expectations, such as warnings against the use of force, and we are constantly monitoring the situation. Armenia is a close partner and friend of the United States, and we look forward to working with the Armenian authorities to strengthen Armenia's political and economic security," the US State Department added.

Azerbaijan's response

Commenting on the statement by the US State Department officials, Aykhan Hajizada, the press secretary of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, pointed out that official Baku was not satisfied with this approach.

According to Hajizadeh, official Washington has not advocated Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty for years. "The US has never demanded the liberation of Azerbaijani territories from occupation, the withdrawal of Armenian forces, including the abolition of the so-called Armenian regime, through international obligations, including within the framework of four UN Security Council resolutions," Hajizadeh said.
