USAID Denies Georgian Dream's Claims of Funding Extremists in Georgia
On October 26, Erin Elizabeth McKee, the USAID Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia, refuted allegations by the ruling Georgian Dream party that USAID is funding extremists in Georgia through Georgian NGO projects.
Asserting that every citizen's voice is heard, which is fundamental to a thriving democracy, McKee said that first and foremost, USAID works with a variety of civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations to help strengthen and improve the democratic process. The speaker emphasized, "Any claims that the United States is supporting revolution through USAID are blatantly false and, to be honest, misinformation."
"We support every organization that represents the Georgian people to protect their rights to participate in their democracy, regardless of the outcome. Unfortunately, this was the ruling party's response to USAID activities," she noted. McKee said, "Our goal is to defend and maintain the democratic process, guarantee a free and fair election, and ensure the result is impregnable regardless of who wins."
