On January 21, Alen Simonyan, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, addressed journalists in parliament, covering topics such as the trial of Armenian detainees in Baku, Armenia’s aspirations for EU membership, and its relations with Azerbaijan.

Simonyan described the trial of Armenian detainees in Baku as "sad" but expressed hope for their eventual release. He criticized former Nagorno-Karabakh officials for interfering in the matter, stating, “The most appropriate action on their part is silence.” He dismissed claims that Armenia abandoned the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, emphasizing that Armenia never recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state.

Regarding Armenia’s potential EU membership, Simonyan remarked, “The EU membership process reflects the will of the Armenian people,” and affirmed Armenia’s sovereignty in deciding its laws and policies. Addressing concerns raised by Russia over Armenia’s growing ties with the EU, he stated, “If it poses a problem for them, it is something the Armenian and Russian sides can discuss.”

Simonyan acknowledged progress in peace negotiations with Azerbaijan, highlighting agreements on border delimitation and legal documentation. However, he rejected calls to include a clause on the return of prisoners in the peace treaty, asserting that this issue is being addressed separately. He also clarified that the matter of enclaves is not part of the current delimitation process and stressed the importance of formal legal documentation for all territorial matters.

Commenting on EU observation missions, Simonyan praised their role in ensuring border security and announced Armenia’s intention to extend the mission’s mandate. He dismissed Azerbaijani claims that Armenia’s actions were provocative, emphasizing the need for precise language to avoid escalating tensions.

On economic relations, Simonyan reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), describing it as economically advantageous and stating that Armenia has no intention of leaving the organization. Addressing security concerns, he said, “Armenia is a democratic country, which serves as one of the most reliable security cushions.”

In response to accusations of territorial claims by Azerbaijan, Simonyan reiterated that Armenia has no such ambitions. He emphasized the importance of accurate terminology to prevent provocations and expressed support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement that Armenia’s borders end with the provinces of Armavir and Tavush.
