Armenia and Azerbaijan Reach a Breakthrough

On December 7, the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister's Office of the Republic of Armenia issued a joint statement.

CaucasusWatch presents the statement: "The Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan share the view that there is a historic opportunity to achieve a long-awaited peace in the region. The two countries reaffirm their intention to normalize relations and conclude a peace treaty on the basis of respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Following the talks between the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister's Office of the Republic of Armenia, an agreement was reached on taking concrete steps to build confidence between the two countries.

Driven by the values of humanism and as a gesture of goodwill, the Republic of Azerbaijan releases 32 Armenian servicemen.

In turn, the Republic of Armenia, inspired by the values of humanism and as a gesture of goodwill, releases 2 Azerbaijani servicemen.

As a gesture of good will, the Republic of Armenia supports the candidacy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to host the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change by withdrawing its own candidacy. The Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan hope that the other countries of the Eastern European Group will also support Azerbaijan's candidacy. As a good gesture, the Republic of Azerbaijan supports the Armenian candidacy for membership in the COP Bureau of the Eastern European Group.

The Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan will continue their discussions on the implementation of further confidence-building measures in the near future and call upon the international community to support their efforts, which will contribute to the building of mutual trust between the two countries and will have a positive impact on the entire South Caucasus region".
