Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister: "We Have No Hope, Trust, and Confidence in Iranian Side"
On January 29, Azerbaijan completely suspended the diplomatic activities of its Embassy in Tehran. Employees of Azerbaijan's diplomatic mission in Tehran and their family members were brought to Baku by a special plane flight. In total, 53 people were evacuated. The body of senior lieutenant Orkhan Asgarov, who was martyred as a result of the terrorist attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran, was also brought by the same plane.
On the same day, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov told reporters that the embassy's activity was suspended due to the safety of the diplomatic mission and its employees. "We have no hope, trust, and confidence in the Iranian side," he added.
"It is a severe matter to stop the activity of a diplomatic mission in any country. We have brought to the attention of the Iranian side that we do not trust Iran in ensuring the safety of our embassy employees. We have repeatedly brought to the attention of the Iranian side that there are threats against the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the territory of Iran. Therefore, we demanded to increase in security measures. The incident showed that Iran was irresponsible to our demands," the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs said.
According to him, five employees remained at the embassy to protect the administrative building and property of the diplomatic mission. "However, they will not engage in diplomatic activities," Khalafov stressed.
At the same time, according to him, the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Tabriz continues its activities. "The complete suspension of the diplomatic activity of our embassy in Tehran does not apply to the activity of our consulate general in Tabriz. We must take into account that many of our citizens are in Iran. If they also need help, they can contact the Consulate General in Tabriz. The protection of our Consulate General in Tabriz and ensuring the safety of the people working there is the responsibility of the Iranian state as a whole. We hope that the Iranian state, which has drawn appropriate conclusions from the terrorist act, will not allow such situations in the future. "Each state that accepts embassy staff must be faithful to its obligations and take appropriate measures within the framework of these obligations," the Deputy Minister noted.
