Former Basayev's Armed Group Soldier Detained in North Caucasus

On June 13, a resident of the Stavropol Territory, suspected of attacking the Botlikh district of Dagestan in 1999, was taken into custody.

"Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the North Caucasian Federal District during the investigation of a criminal case initiated in 1999 on the fact of the intrusion of stable armed groups [gangs] under the general leadership of Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab into the territory of the Botlikh region of the Republic of Dagestan, as well as those committed during it encroachments on the lives of law enforcement officers and military personnel of the Russian Federation, evidence has been obtained of the involvement of a resident of the Neftekumsky district of the Stavropol Territory, Rustam Yarbuldiev, in the commission of these crimes," the message added.

According to the information, in June-July 1999, Yarbuldiyev voluntarily joined a gang under the general leadership of Basayev and Khattab and took an active part in the commission of grave and especially grave crimes. From August 7 to August 24, 1999, acting as part of a group of militants armed with automatic weapons, grenades, and explosive devices, with a total number of at least 1,000 people, he took an active part in an armed rebellion to overthrow the constitutional order and violate the territorial integrity of Russia.

As a result of a massive targeted shelling carried out by gang members, 33 servicemen were killed, and 34 suffered bodily injuries of varying severity. Yarbuldyev, with the assistance of the Federal Security Service of Russia, was detained in accordance with Article 91 Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation. The court chose a measure of restraint against him in the form of detention.
