Nikol Pashinyan Comments on Route Change from Armenia to Karabakh and Military Transfers

At the meeting of the republic's government on 30 March, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced a change in the road route from Armenia to [separatist] Nagorno-Karabakh. "By agreement between the authorities of Azerbaijan and [de facto] Nagorno-Karabakh, the route of the Lachin Corridor was changed in August 2022, and a new road was put into operation," the head of government indicated.

"However, since the road connecting the Lachin Corridor with the Republic of Armenia was not fully completed, a temporary route was used, which first entered Armenia via the Kornidzor bridge, then crossed the territory of Azerbaijan, and then again crossed the territory of Armenia. According to the current agreement, this route should be used until 1 April 2023," Pashinyan said. According to him, Armenia had informed the Azerbaijani side the day before that, according to the agreement, after the Kornidzor bridge the road would pass only through the territory of Armenia and the border troops would take over the protection of the Armenian border in this section.

"I would like to point out that the border troops will be deployed on the border of the Republic of Armenia, where units of the armed forces have been stationed until now," the Prime Minister said. Pashinyan drew attention to the fact that there were reports in the Azerbaijani media that tried to present the situation as another blockbuster. According to the Armenian leader, this approach is not constructive. "There has been no change in the Armenian positions. The only change is the transfer of border protection from the Armenian army to the border guards," he asserted, hoping that this process would take place without provocations.

He also stated that Armenia is not carrying out any military redeployments to Nagorno-Karabakh and that Azerbaijan's claims to the contrary are false.
According to him, Baku's accusations that military supplies, equipment and personnel are coming from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh are a propaganda ploy to legitimise possible military actions in the future. The head of the government noted that Azerbaijan not only continues the illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor, but also last week made another incursion into the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh.
