Pashinyan Calls for National Clarity on Identity, Emigration, and Church Transparency
On January 24, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the Armenian community in Switzerland, focusing on issues related to Armenia's development, identity, and emigration.
During the meeting, Pashinyan emphasized the importance of education and work in the country’s transformation, noting the concept of "real Armenia" and the challenges in defining state and national interests after the 2020 war. He stated that the distinction between "nation" and "people," as well as between state and national interests, needs to be clarified to strengthen state formation.
Pashinyan expressed concern over the increasing emigration from the Armenian Diaspora, noting that many Armenians are losing connection to their heritage. He highlighted the decline of national organizations traditionally affiliated with institutions like the Armenian Apostolic Church and emphasized that saving the Diaspora depends on the Republic of Armenia.
Addressing relations between the state and the church, Pashinyan reaffirmed the government’s position of non-interference in religious affairs but stressed the need for greater transparency within the church. He suggested that the church should adhere to the same financial transparency standards as other institutions and clarified that any taxes collected from the church would be returned to it.
Finally, Pashinyan called for a re-examination of the history of the Armenian Genocide, urging the community to reflect on the historical timeline of recognition and understand their identity in relation to these events. He emphasized the necessity of understanding Armenia’s history and identity to address these fundamental questions.
