Russia Summons Armenian Ambassador Over Doubts About Alliance

| News, Politics, Armenia

On September 8, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that certain doubts have recently appeared in official circles and the political elite of the Republic of Armenia about the expediency of allied ties within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and with Russia on a bilateral basis, as well as about the feasibility of a set of trilateral agreements between Moscow, Yerevan, and Baku on ways to normalize Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

"Against this background, the Armenian leadership has taken a series of unfriendly steps in recent days, including the launch of the process of ratification of the Rome Statute of the ICC, a trip to Kyiv by the wife of Prime Minister A.V. Hakobyan to deliver humanitarian aid to the Kyiv Nazi regime, and the holding of military exercises on Armenian territory with the participation of the United States," the report added.

"In this regard, Armenian Ambassador to Moscow B.V. Harutyunyan was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, and a tough representation was made to him. In addition, a note of protest was sent, in which it was pointed out the unacceptability of the insulting statements of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, A.R. Simonyan, of September 6 addressed to the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Director of the Department of Information and Press M.V. Zakharova and the Russian Foreign Ministry as a whole. Separately, concern was expressed about the detention of blogger M. Badalyan and Sputnik Armenia radio columnist A. Gevorgyan in Armenia on September 7," the information said.

The ministry noted, "At the same time, Moscow firmly proceeds from the fact that Russia and Armenia remain allies, and all agreements on the development and strengthening of partnership relations will be fully implemented for the benefit of the peoples of our two countries. This, among other things, refers to the organization of the CSTO exercises and the future dispatch of the Organization's observation mission to the republic in order to promote the settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan."
