Uzbekistan Supports Launch of "Zangezur Corridor"

In an interview with the Trend news agency, Abdusamat Muminov, the Deputy Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan, said that Uzbekistan supports Azerbaijan's initiative to launch the so called Zangezur Corridor. This corridor, if implemented, would give Azerbaijan unimpeded access to Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic via Armenia's Syunik province and, in a broad sense, would connect Turkey to the Central Asia and China.

According to Muminov, thanks to this project, the transportation of goods from Uzbekistan through the territory of Azerbaijan will increase significantly. "Uzbekistan has always supported and will continue to support Azerbaijan's initiatives to develop transport links. The Zangezur Corridor is a very important project. According to our initial estimates, it will allow transporting about 5-10 million tons of cargo. The advantage of this transport route also lies in its geographical convenience. If other routes pass through the highlands, then this corridor is more gentle. Accordingly, it becomes possible to transport more cargo in a shorter period," the deputy minister noted.

Muminov further indicated that Tashkent is currently actively working to reorient its cargo in the Azerbaijani direction, thus developing the potential of the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route). "Today, we are very actively using the transport potential of Azerbaijan, including the capabilities of the Baku International Sea Trade Port, and in particular for the import of sugar," he added.

Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan plans to open its own terminal in the Baku port and increase deliveries through the ports of Azerbaijan and Georgia to 1.5 million tons.
