Azerbaijani MP Wounded by Gunshot
On the evening of March 28, Azerbaijani MP Fazil Mustafa was attacked in front of his house in Baku. The Press Service of the Prosecutor General's Office reported that a criminal case had been initiated by the prosecutor's office regarding the fact that MP Fazil Mustafa was injured as a result of fire from a firearm in front of his house in the Sabunchu district of the capital.
The State Security Service stated that the armed attack against the MP Fazil Mustafa was a terrorist act. "As a result of the terrorist act, Fazil Mustafa received a bullet wound that pierced the right shoulder girdle and the lower third of the right thigh. Necessary medical services are provided to him, and his condition is assessed as stable. There is no danger to life," the State Security Service stated. About the fact, in the main investigative department of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, 277 of the Criminal Code (attempt to end the service or political activity of a public official or public figure or to take revenge for this activity) and 228.2.1 (premeditated conspiracy). A criminal case was initiated by a group of persons with the articles of illegal acquisition, storage, transportation and movement of firearms, their complete parts, ammunition). "Complex urgent operational-investigative measures are being implemented in order to identify the person who committed the terrorist act and other persons connected with the crime and bring them to criminal responsibility," the information added.
Moreover, on March 28, a Telegram channel linked to the the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported the "murder" of a Milli Majlis Fazil Mustafa member at 11:08 PM. "Fazil Gazanfaroglu (Mustafa), an Azerbaijani MP known for his anti-Iranian and anti-Islamic statements, has been murdered," the Telegram post said. The message was posted half an hour after the assassination attempt. "Azerbaijani media and many government agencies were not yet aware of it. Nothing was known about Mustafa's condition at that point, either. All this is indirect evidence of the involvement of Iranian secret services and Iranian agents in this assassination attempt," Turan news agency claims.
Notably, the shooting of Fazil Mustafa is the fourth incident in which a firearm was used in the capital in the last month. Before that, there were armed incidents in Fountain Square, in one of the Bravo markets in the capital, and near the Baku State Circus.
For information, Fazil Mustafa was born in 1965 in the city of Nakhchivan. In 1986, he entered the Faculty of Law of Baku State University (Azerbaijan State University) and, in 1991, graduated from that faculty with the qualification of a lawyer. He participated in the people's movement. In 1991-1992, he worked as an adviser to the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Front (APC); in 1992, he worked as the head of the Analytical Center of the APK. In 1992-1993, he worked as the head of the State Law Department of the Presidential Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2003, he founded the Big Organization Party and was elected as the head of the party at the first congress. In 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020, it was announced that he was elected as a deputy in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th convocation Milli Majlis elections.
Interestingly, Fazil Mustafa is known for his speeches against Iran. A few days ago, he again criticized Iran's recent confrontations with Azerbaijan and made harsh speeches against Tehran. For several months, the State Security Service of Azerbaijan has been reporting the arrest of Iran's agent agency in the country.
